Tried Something New Today

I had visions of Patrick Swayze in the original Point Break. Visions of Deran and Craig Cody in Animal Kingdom. Beach Boys songs playing in my head.

The sun was shining. The waves rolled into and out from the beach. A fine salty mist filled the air as each wave broke with majestic power into the receding tide.

I had stretched my wet suit over my body and it was working itself into parts of my body that I wish it wasn’t. At the same time, I feel like I looked pretty good in it. Bonus.

I had worked the board out to where the good waves were swelling. I didn’t expect the damn board to move around so much. I didn’t expect to drink so much ocean water. But I pressed on.

Legs and arms were hanging off the board, but I worked them back on. I slid off the board, but I got myself back up.

Then, the wave was behind me. This was my moment. I was certain there was natural, unbridled surfing talent coursing through my veins. It was going to be glorious!

Not so much. Didn’t nail it.

So the first attempted ride in was fine. Got up to my knees on the board at one point, but then the wave ran its course and disappeared into the vast ocean, sucking me in after it.

Bound and determined, I got back into position on the board and began paddling with all I had to get out to the sweet spot, again. The waves had picked up, so it was a pretty intense battle. Took a few large waves to the face, fell off the board once or twice, and frankly, by the time I got back out – I was whipped.

Regained my composure (sort of), caught another wave after it had broken, and rode the foam in trying to get to back onto my knees. But I was too slow, and once again the wave petered out. I decided that was it for the day.

Next time, baby, I’m gonna crush it!

Cocktail of the day is the Pickled Surfer. A fascinating blend of whiskey, pickle juice and a lime squeeze, that is quite soothing to the bruised ego suffered after learning you have no natural talent for surfing.

Exercise tune of the day, having nothing to do with surfing, is Mississippi Moonshine by Saving Abel. Gotta love a little rockabilly! Until next time – enjoy!
